Early Life and Background

Sant Tukaram Maharaj was born in 1608 in Dehu, near Pune, Maharashtra. Dehu, situated on the banks of the Indrayani River, later became a sacred pilgrimage place because of him.

He was born into a family devoted to Lord Vitthal of Pandharpur. His parents, Bolhoba and Kanakai, were deeply religious and followed the Varkari tradition. From childhood, Tukaram absorbed devotion naturally — like breathing.
